filaria were rampant. The first
dispensary established in Amini
in 1874 had to be closed since people
were prejudicial and did not avail
the services provided by the dispensary.
After a gap of about 31 years, dispensaries
were opened in Kavaratti and Agatti
in 1936, and after independence,
the following healthcare facilities
were established. In 1964 40 bedded
was introduced at Kavaratti.
Indira Gandhi Hospital is the referral hospital for the territory.
With the introduction of Tele-medicine facilities at Indira Gandhi Hospital Kavaratti the health services in the territory entered a new era. The doctors are now able to consult specialists on the mainland and pursue treatment.
