In olden days, epidemics and smallpox used to take heavy toll and leprosy and filaria were rampant. The first dispensary established in Amini in 1874 had to be closed since people were prejudicial and did not avail the services provided by the dispensary. After a gap of about 31 years, dispensaries were opened in Kavaratti and Agatti in 1936, and after independence, the following healthcare facilities were established.
