Land Development and Water Conservation Management

       Lakshadweep is a group of  very small islands.  Naturally  formed coral  reefs  with considerable area of lagoon detaching from deep sea is the nature’s blessing protecting  from total wash off or sinking. Land is very limited.  No addition/ accretion   of land is taking place.  But erosion is a regular phenomenon, which can be visible.  The change in wind  direction causing underwater currents results in erosion through out the coastal line  seasonally.

Added importance has been given by the  Planning Commission for soil and water conservation, efficient use of soil & water, raising productivity of land,   and  connected activities  which have also direct bearing to improving ecology and environment.    Thrust in X Five Year Plan is to protect the vulnerable coastal  belt of the islands, by way of strengthening littoral and mangrove vegetation, introducing soil binding type saline resistant plants to check soil erosion to the minimum level.  Also, it is planned to take up moisture conservation packages and application of soil conditioners and ameliorants for the development of the land within the purview of Environmental Impact assessment.
