Responsibilities
- The department has provided Nursery Schools
in all islands except Bitra to prepare the
children to regular schooling.
- There are 20 primary schools in the islands
in line with the national norm of providing
one primary school within the radius of one
kilometer.
- There are 4 Senior Basic Schools of which two
are exclusively for girls.
- The department has provided High Schools in
all inhabited islands.
- All High Schools have SSLC examination
centres. Regular and private candidates
are permitted to appear for the examination.
- High School at Kavaratti is providing +2
Education on CBSE pattern and Minicoy School
is providing +2 education on Kerala pattern.
Consequent on the de linking of +2 education
from colleges as a national norm two junior
Colleges were converted to Senior Secondary
Schools. They are JNSSS, Kadmat and
MGSSS, Androth. They are following
Kerala pattern of education and they have
examination centres for the Board exam as
well as CBSE examination.
- The students of Lakshadweep are provided
seats in various colleges at mainland to
pursue higher education in professional and
non professional courses. In the beginning of
the academic year the department allotts
seats for various courses aginst the reserved
seats according to the merit of the
applicants.. The department conducts coaching
classes for MBBS/BDS entrance examination
every year. The entrance examinations are
conducted with the help of Cochin University
for alloting the of Govt. of India reserved
seats for MBBS/BDS. The application forms for
various courses are usually made available in
all high schools during the month of January
and February..
- All ST students from Lakshadweep are eligible
to get scholarship for their study from
standard VIII to higher level of education.
Education officer, Kochi is empowered to draw
and disburse the scholarships to those
students who are studying on the mainland. In
addition to the monthly scholarship the
students at mainland are provided with lump
sum grant, pocket money and travel
concession.
- The high school headmasters in Islands are
empowered to disburse the scholarship for the
students studying in VIII standard to X
standard.
- Hostel facility is provided at Kavaratti,
Andrott and Kadmat for +2 students.
- PTA has been formed in all Islands for the
day-to-day participation of parents in school
administration.The active involvement of PTA
and mother groups in the academic activities
of schools has helped in increasing enrolment
and reducing dropouts.
