

The Department of Environment and Forests started functioning independently under the Lakshadweep Administration with effect from 1.4.1999 after bifurcation of the erstwhile Department of Science, Technology and Environment. The Department is headed by an Indian Forest Service Officer of the rank of Deputy Conserver of Forests who is assisted by five Environment Wardens and One Technical Assistant. The Headquarter of the department is at Kavaratti island and has Offices at Kadmat, Kalpeni, Andrott and Kiltan islands. The Deputy Conservator of Forests is also the Chief Wild Life Warden of the Lakshadweep.
