The Union Territory of Lakshadweep is declared as one of the No.Industry Districts of the country along with Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Mizoram etc. vide notification F.No.7/(15)/71-IC dated.30.09.1972. However industrial potential surveys were conducted by the following Institutions to asses the appropriate Industries suitable to Lakshadweep.
- Industrial Development Bank of India:Year 1973.
- Small Industries Service Institute, Trichur: Year 1979-80
- Regional Research Laboratory, Trivandrum:
- Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation Cochin
- Report of the export group set up by planning Commission: Year 1993
Industries which do not require huge quantity of water power and which do not pollute the lagoons and soil are best suited to these tiny islands. Based on these recommendations plan schemes for this U.T.
The department of Industries was established in 1960 and is located in the capital island. The department is now functioning with a total strength of one hundred and sixty eight staff managing fibre factories, handicraft training cum production centre, coir yarn production centres and DCP coir unit spread over the islands.
